Deepgram acquires Daily, maker of popular open-source Pipecat framework
October 29, 2026
Owning the orchestration layer lets Deepgram bundle speech models with real-time infrastructure, deepening its grip on the full voice AI stack.
- Deepgram acquired Daily, the company behind the widely used open-source Pipecat voice-agent framework, with deal terms left undisclosed.
- Daily runs hosted real-time voice and video infrastructure across 75 global points of presence, while its Pipecat framework links speech-to-text, LLMs, and text-to-speech models into one low-latency pipeline.
- Pipecat stays free under its existing BSD V2 license, and the companies are spinning up an independent Pipecat Foundation so rivals can keep contributing without fearing vendor lock-in.
- Daily had raised over $62 million from investors including Tiger Global and Nat Friedman; co-founder Kwindla Kramer joins Deepgram as Head of Open Source rather than cashing out and leaving.
- Deepgram itself only became a unicorn in January 2026 via a $130 million Series C, and now says over 5,000 organizations run its speech models in production.
- The acquisition was announced alongside Deepgram's new Real-Time Context Standard, an open protocol co-developed with Pipecat to carry tone and conversational context across model handoffs.
- Folding Pipecat's orchestration layer and Daily's network into Deepgram's speech models shows voice AI players racing to own the whole stack as OpenAI and ElevenLabs push further into real-time voice.
