Neuralink unveils Telepathy, a thought-controlled implant still in trials

October 30, 2026

The brain implant remains unapproved by regulators, a reminder that naming a product isn't the same as shipping one.

  • Elon Musk announced on X that Neuralink's brain-computer interface will be branded Telepathy, calling it the company's first product, alongside a second product called Blindsight.
  • Neuralink has been implanting its N1 chip in paralyzed clinical-trial participants since January 2024 under its PRIME study, letting them control cursors and keyboards with their thoughts.
  • Telepathy runs on the N1 implant, which has 1,024 electrodes across 64 hair-thin threads placed into the motor cortex by Neuralink's R1 surgical robot.
  • Blindsight, Neuralink's second product, aims to route camera-captured images directly into the visual cortex for blind users; it won FDA Breakthrough Device designation in September 2024 but has no human vision results yet.
  • Musk projects Telepathy's output bandwidth will eventually exceed human speech (~150 words per minute) and typing, though current trial participants' real-world throughput is well below that target.
  • Neither product has FDA market approval; Telepathy remains confined to clinical trials, meaning this announcement assigns a brand name rather than launching a purchasable device.
  • The naming push signals Neuralink's pivot from research project to consumer-style product line, but the gap between Musk's bandwidth and vision-restoration claims and demonstrated clinical results remains wide.
