Canva launches Brush, an in-house vision-language model for design edits
October 29, 2026
The model lets Canva cut reliance on outside AI vendors by building its own editing engine for hundreds of millions of users.
- Canva launched Brush on October 29, 2026, a vision-language model built by Canva Research that edits designs based on user instructions.
- Brush reads a design's layout, layers and visual style, then executes edits ranging from a single line of text to every slide in a deck, while keeping outputs fully editable.
- The model runs an agentic loop, writing and executing code to adjust design elements, then inspecting the canvas to guide its next move before refining further.
- Canva says Brush is up to 69% faster at general design editing tasks and 46% cheaper per edit than its previous design agent.
- Brush follows Canva Craft, an image-generation model launched a week earlier that Canva says ranked second globally on DesignArena; Craft generates images and Brush refines the designs around them.
- Both models come from Canva Research, the company's 160-person in-house AI lab, and Brush is rolling out first to Canva Pro subscribers with wider availability planned.
- By building its own editing model instead of licensing outside AI, Canva can lower costs per task while betting that in-house models tuned to real design workflows outperform general-purpose AI tools.
