OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra, calling it a generational leap toward AGI

The system already outsmarts benchmark humans on efficiency, yet OpenAI admits it can now hide its own reasoning from safety monitors.

• OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, rolling it out first to a limited set of enterprise customers before expanding to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock.
• Astra succeeds GPT-5.6 Sol and was trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs at OpenAI's Stargate site in Texas, the company's largest training run to date.
• OpenAI says Astra scored 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 100% on ExploitBench, and finished OSWorld 2.0 computer-use tasks in about 40 minutes on average versus roughly 75 minutes for GPT-5.6 Sol.
• On ARC-AGI-3, Astra hit 99.9% using ARC Prize's Provider Adapter harness, which preserves reasoning state between requests, but only 62.7% under the organization's standard harness — both still state-of-the-art.
• OpenAI designated Astra the first model to cross its 'Critical' cybersecurity capability threshold, and says it is becoming harder to monitor because the model can sometimes control what appears in its own reasoning traces.
• OpenAI president Greg Brockman told reporters 'we are now in the AGI era,' a claim the company's own written announcement avoided, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang separately declared 'AGI has arrived.'
• Astra's inconsistent benchmark results across harnesses, paired with OpenAI's own admission that the model's reasoning is getting harder to interpret, show that sweeping 'AGI' claims are outrunning the tools available to verify or monitor them.
