Power access, not silicon supply, is becoming the constraint that decides where AI data centers can actually be built.
- Nvidia will invest up to $3 billion in power infrastructure developer Lancium, an initial $2 billion for a roughly 20% stake, with another $1 billion tied to grid-hookup milestones, according to Reuters citing The Information.
- Unlike traditional data center operators, Lancium develops large-scale sites combining land, transmission lines and grid connectivity, letting AI campuses come online faster than greenfield projects.
- The deal values Lancium's portfolio of land and power connections at roughly $10 billion enterprise value; Blackstone has already invested more than $500 million in the company.
- Lancium's 1,000-acre Clean Campus in Abilene, Texas holds a 1.2GW ERCOT-approved grid interconnect and is the first operational site of the Stargate initiative.
- Stargate is a joint venture between SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle, unveiled by President Trump in January with plans for up to $500 billion in U.S. AI infrastructure spending.
- The capital is meant to fund Lancium's expansion as it explores a potential IPO in 2027.
- As GPU supply races ahead of grid capacity, Nvidia is moving beyond chip sales to lock in the physical power and land access that determines where AI compute can actually be deployed.
