Power utilities and grid operators, not just tech VCs, are betting energy scarcity will limit AI's growth more than chip supply.
- Emerald AI raised $150 million in an oversubscribed Series A round at a $1.05 billion valuation, co-led by Energize Capital and DCVC.
- Its Emerald Conductor software orchestrates AI computing workloads and onsite energy resources so a data center can throttle its power draw when the grid is stressed, without disrupting critical jobs.
- The round drew a strategic roster including Nvidia, Siemens, RWE, GE Vernova, Aramco Ventures and Samsung Ventures, bringing to 12 the number of Fortune Global 500 companies holding stakes.
- The raise pushes Emerald AI's total funding past $220 million, achieved less than a year after the two-year-old company exited stealth.
- Emerald says its approach could unlock more than 100 gigawatts of capacity on the existing U.S. grid, relevant since the IEA projects data centers will drive nearly half of U.S. electricity demand growth through 2030.
- Emerald is working with Digital Realty and Nvidia on a nearly 100-megawatt 'Vera Rubin AI Research Factory' in Manassas, Virginia, which it calls the world's first power-flexible AI data center.
- Power generators like RWE and JERA writing early-stage checks signals that grid capacity, not chip supply, is now seen as the binding constraint on AI's growth.
