Terranova breaks ground on $500M AI data center in Campinas, Brazil

The full build-out could scale to 400MW and roughly $2B, positioning the region as a serious contender for global AI compute capacity.

• Terranova, the Actis-backed hyperscale developer, broke ground on the first phase of its Campus Campinas AI data center in Barão Geraldo, São Paulo, with an initial investment exceeding $500M.
• Terranova launched in 2025 to build greenfield hyperscale data centers across Brazil, Mexico and Chile and is backed by global infrastructure investor Actis.
• The 944,000m² Campus Campinas site will deliver 216MW of IT capacity in its first phase, with potential to reach 386MW after further build-out, while preserving 285,000m² as green space.
• A 300MW substation built under a Siemens Energy infrastructure contract is set for energization by December 2027, with potential expansion up to 1GW.
• Terranova estimates the project will support around 3,000 construction jobs and roughly 650 permanent operational roles over a five-year horizon.
• Total investment could quadruple to roughly R$20 billion (about $2B) across all rollout phases running through 2029, according to local officials at the groundbreaking.
• Campinas is Terranova's largest project to date after it opened its first Latin American site, an 8.12MW facility in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in February 2026.
• At full capacity the campus could add up to 400MW, roughly 40% of Brazil's current commissioned data center capacity, illustrating how fast AI demand is pulling capital into emerging-market compute infrastructure.
