- Discovered Materials closed a $9 million seed round led by Lightspeed India Partners, with Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners, and angel investors including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar also participating.
- The startup runs cloud-based AI agents that use Anthropic models to generate candidate chip materials, then verifies them with custom-trained physics simulation models before recommending which ones to synthesize.
- GPUs today handle heat fluxes of roughly 140 watts per square centimeter, hotter than a space shuttle nose cone during re-entry, which is why data centers burn so much power and water on cooling.
- Alongside the raise, the company released hundreds of AI-discovered materials and launched Material Discovery Bench, described as the first benchmark for agentic materials discovery on real semiconductor problems.
- In three months, the company's AI systems produced new thermal materials matching the performance of products that took major chemical companies years to develop.
