Beta Tech flies 275‑mile electric organ cargo in FAA pilot

Beta Technologies completed 275‑nautical‑mile electric aircraft organ delivery flights under the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, marking the program’s first operational campaign and a key advanced air mobility milestone.

Beta Technologies has completed the first operational flights under the U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, using its all‑electric ALIA CTOL aircraft to transport manufactured organs across a multistate corridor in Virginia and Maryland. The campaign covered approximately 275 nautical miles, linking Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport in Blacksburg, Charlottesville‑Albemarle Airport, Frederick Municipal Airport, and Martin State Airport near Baltimore in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Virginia Department of Aviation, and the Maryland Aviation Administration. The missions were flown for biotech partner United Therapeutics, which is developing manufactured organ products, and are framed as the first electric conventional takeoff and landing flights conducted within the FAA’s new eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

The milestone shifts Beta from demonstration flights to supervised operational logistics, generating real‑world data on routing, ground coordination, and aircraft performance over hundreds of nautical miles under federal oversight. The eIPP is designed to accelerate the safe integration of advanced air mobility into the National Airspace System, informing future certification policy, operational frameworks, and commercialization pathways across healthcare, cargo, defense and other mission‑critical use cases in at least 26 states. Beta was selected for seven of the FAA’s eight launch projects, more than any other electric aircraft developer, underscoring its position as a key industry participant. The company reports having flown its ALIA family more than 150,000–160,000 nautical miles and deployed over 100–123 charging sites across the U.S. and Canada, building an ecosystem intended to support routine low‑cost, lower‑carbon medical logistics.

Beyond aircraft operations, Beta is also expanding into systems supply: Horizon Aircraft has chosen the company’s advanced flight control computers and software for its Cavorite X7 hybrid‑electric VTOL program, adding a third‑party avionics revenue stream alongside aircraft and charging infrastructure sales. The organ‑delivery flights and new systems partnerships collectively signal Beta’s move toward diversified commercial activity ahead of planned FAA certifications for its conventional and vertical‑takeoff variants later this decade, while giving regulators and state partners an operational template for scaling electric aviation in healthcare and other time‑critical logistics.
