The seven-month-old firm already locked in a $10B Anthropic compute deal, treating GPU access as a financing problem, not just an engineering one.
- Volta Infra Holdings raised $300M in combined seed and Series A funding co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital, valuing the seven-month-old AI cloud startup at $2.4B.
- Founded in January 2026 by former Brookfield Asset Management infrastructure executives Ricard Boada and Sofia Gumuzio, Volta develops, finances and operates AI data centers it calls 'AI factories.'
- Alongside the equity, Volta secured a $5B financing pool arranged by asset manager Azora, from a mix of banks, to help other tech firms afford Nvidia's costly GPU hardware.
- Volta also signed a $10B, six-year cloud compute contract with Anthropic, delivered with Bitdeer Technologies from a 133MW Norway data center running Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips.
- Nvidia is both an investor in Volta and the supplier of the chips it deploys, a circular arrangement critics say could amplify losses across the AI compute chain if demand ever falls short.
- Volta says it has already secured roughly 1 gigawatt of near-term power capacity, with further sites planned in Texas and Wyoming beyond the initial Norway project.
- Volta's pitch treats GPU access as a balance-sheet problem, not just an engineering one, since only hyperscalers can self-fund multibillion-dollar chip clusters outright.
