Electricity, not chips, is becoming the real bottleneck for AI growth, pushing tech giants to buy stakes in the power plants that keep data centers running.
- Samsung Electronics and five affiliates will invest a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, a KKR-backed AI infrastructure company, led by Samsung Electronics' $500 million commitment.
- Helix, launched in June 2026 by KKR, builds hyperscale data centers, power generation, transmission and fiber networks for hyperscalers, and is led by former AWS CEO Adam Selipsky.
- Samsung Electronics puts in $500 million, while Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance split the remaining $500 million.
- The new commitment adds to more than $10 billion in long-term capital Helix already secured at launch from KKR, Nvidia, the Kuwait Investment Authority and Vistra.
- The deal expands Samsung's role from chip supplier to infrastructure financier, letting it apply cooling systems from its FlaktGroup unit, batteries and construction expertise to data center buildouts.
- Samsung Electronics shares rose 2.13% on the news even as South Korea's benchmark Kospi index fell 0.53%.
- The investment underscores how power availability, not just chip supply, has become the central constraint on scaling AI infrastructure, drawing conglomerates into energy and grid financing.
