Moonshot AI preps $30B+ Hong Kong IPO after Kimi K3 stuns markets

Investors now have a public-market way to bet on whether China has actually closed the AI capability gap.
- Moonshot AI has circulated a shareholder resolution seeking approval for a Hong Kong listing within six months, Bloomberg reported, while closing a funding round that could value it above $30 billion.
- Founded in 2023 by former Tsinghua professor Yang Zhilin, Moonshot sells tiered Kimi chatbot subscriptions, enterprise API access, and a new agent product called Kimi Work.
- The listing push follows Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model that Artificial Analysis found beat Anthropic's Opus 4.8 on some frontier benchmarks — a first for a Chinese open-weight model.
- Annual recurring revenue jumped 50% in two months, from $200M in April to $300M in June, and daily K3 sales rose at least sixfold after launch, forcing a temporary subscription pause.
- Moonshot is dismantling its offshore VIE structure, a prerequisite for a smoother Hong Kong listing, after abandoning hopes for a CSRC waiver on that structure earlier this year.
- K3's benchmark showing triggered a semiconductor sell-off that dragged down bitcoin and other risk assets, and drew a "concerning" reaction from former White House AI adviser David Sacks.
- A $30B-plus Hong Kong listing would set a public valuation benchmark for Chinese AI startups and sharpen doubts about whether Silicon Valley's AI spending is buying it a durable lead.
