Cloudflare launches Wallets, letting AI agents autonomously pay for APIs

August 4, 2026

Spending limits live at the wallet's API layer, not inside the AI model, closing a security gap agentic commerce has ignored.

  • Cloudflare launched Cloudflare Wallets and the cloudflare.pay identity service on August 4, 2026 during its Agents Week event; wallet handles can be claimed now while stablecoin payment functions roll out later.
  • Cloudflare, whose network touches roughly one in five websites, built Wallets to give AI agents a stable identity and a native way to pay for APIs, MCP tools, and content instead of relying on human logins and cards.
  • Humans and organizations hold Account Wallets and can spin up Virtual Wallets for their agents, setting an allowance, an allow list, and a maximum transaction size that agents cannot exceed without a human override.
  • Payments run on the x402 protocol and settle in stablecoins on Base or Solana in about two seconds, letting Cloudflare bypass the fees and latency of traditional card networks.
  • Wallets is the buyer-side complement to Cloudflare's Monetization Gateway, launched July 1, which lets websites charge agents for access via the same x402 rails.
  • PYMNTS Intelligence projects the agentic commerce market will reach $1.7 trillion by 2030, even as nearly half of consumers surveyed still cite fraud and identity concerns as barriers.
  • By enforcing spending caps at the wallet's infrastructure layer rather than in an AI model's prompt, Cloudflare addresses a trust gap that has kept agentic commerce mostly theoretical despite months of protocol-level signaling.
