ZuriQ raises $25.5M seed for trapped-ion quantum processors

The ETH Zurich spinout swaps standard ion traps for a magnetic-field design that lets qubits rearrange in 3D instead of a single line.
- ZuriQ raised $25.5 million in seed funding, according to a July 27, 2026 report from FinSMEs, to advance its Penning-trap quantum processor architecture.
- Founded in 2024 as an ETH Zurich spinout, ZuriQ is led by CEO Pavel Hrmo, CTO Tobias Sägesser and CSO Shreyans Jain, all veterans of ion-trap and quantum-control research.
- ZuriQ's Penning-trap design uses a uniform magnetic field and electrostatic control instead of standard radio-frequency traps, letting ions rearrange into 2D and 3D grids rather than being confined to a single 1D chain.
- The company is targeting a roughly 10,000-qubit, high-fidelity processing module for early applications such as drug design, catalyst discovery and privacy-sensitive computing.
- ZuriQ previously raised $4.2 million in a January 2025 seed round led by Founderful, and has since partnered with Infineon on ion-trap chip fabrication and QC Design on quantum architecture software.
- Scaling ion-trap qubits beyond one-dimensional chains has been a core bottleneck for trapped-ion quantum computing, and ZuriQ's magnetic-field approach is one of several new architectures competing to solve it.
