Bolt and Lucid unveil plan to deploy 25,000 robotaxis across Europe

The agreement is non-binding, unordered and boxed in by an EU approval cap of 1,500 vehicles per type each year.

• Bolt and Lucid announced a non-binding partnership to deploy at least 25,000 fully autonomous Lucid vehicles across European cities, targeting SAE Level 4 autonomy on Lucid's upcoming Midsize platform with NVIDIA Hyperion hardware.
• Bolt is Europe's largest shared-mobility platform, serving more than 200 million customers across 50+ countries and 850+ cities, and will operate the fleet through its dedicated Bolt Autonomous Driving Solutions unit.
• Bolt's autonomy unit will define vehicle, software and safety requirements and own the operating fleet, while Lucid's newly created Lucid Technologies group handles the AI and driver-assistance engineering.
• It's Lucid's second robotaxi bet in just over a year, following Uber's July 2025 commitment to 20,000 Lucid Gravity robotaxis in the US running Nuro's driving software alongside a $300 million investment.
• The framework is non-binding: no vehicles have been ordered, no money has changed hands and no launch date has been set, and it hinges on Lucid's Midsize platform, which the company delayed in August while cutting 18% of its staff.
• The EU's only union-wide type-approval route for a fully automated vehicle caps output at 1,500 units per type each year, meaning 25,000 cars on a single approval could take roughly 17 years unless national routes are used instead.
• Mainstream automakers now treat European robotaxis as inevitable, but the region's slower EU-wide certification process, versus faster national approvals already running driverless service in Zagreb, will decide how quickly any of this actually scales.
