Starcloud, a Redmond, Washington-based startup founded in 2024, raised $170 million in a Series A funding round announced on March 30, 2026, achieving a $1.1 billion valuation. The round, structured in two tranches with Benchmark leading the initial portion and both Benchmark and EQT Ventures co-leading the extension, brings the company's total funding to over $200 million. This marks Starcloud as the fastest Y Combinator graduate to reach unicorn status, just 17 months after its demo day. Participants included Macquarie Capital, NFX, Nebular, Y Combinator, Adjacent, 776 Ventures, Fuse Ventures, Manhattan West, and Monolith Power Systems, alongside angels such as former Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg and former Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson. Benchmark's Chetan Puttagunta will join the board.
The capital will fund development of advanced satellites like Starcloud-3, expand manufacturing, and grow headcount, building on the successful November 2025 launch of Starcloud-1 equipped with an Nvidia H100 GPU. Starcloud aims to deploy up to 88,000 satellites as orbital data centers to address terrestrial limitations in energy and cooling for AI workloads, leveraging unlimited solar power in space. Plans include launching Starcloud-2 later in 2026 with multiple GPUs, including Nvidia Blackwell, and AWS server blades.
This funding underscores surging investor interest in space-based computing amid AI infrastructure demands, positioning Starcloud at the nexus of commercial space and data center innovation. The company's FCC filing for a massive satellite constellation highlights ambitions to create a distributed orbital compute network, potentially reshaping how high-performance computing scales beyond Earth-bound constraints.
