Anthropic buys Stainless for $300M, locking up key AI agent tooling

Anthropic has acquired Stainless, the New York–based developer tools startup that generates official SDKs and MCP servers for leading AI and API platforms, in a deal valued at roughly $300 million. The transaction was announced and closed on May 18, 2026, with Anthropic confirmed as the acquirer and Stainless as the target. Stainless, founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, built software that converts API specifications into production-ready SDKs and command-line tooling across languages including Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and others, and has powered every Anthropic SDK since the earliest days of the Claude API.

The acquisition is explicitly aimed at strengthening Anthropic’s push into AI agents and tool connectivity by bringing Stainless’s SDK generator and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server capabilities in-house. Anthropic and Stainless have stated that all hosted Stainless products, including the SDK generator relied on by rival labs such as OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, and others, will be wound down, although existing customers will retain the SDKs they have already generated and full rights to modify and extend them. While precise financial and structural terms beyond the approximate $300 million price have not been disclosed, the deal removes a shared infrastructure supplier from the broader AI ecosystem and folds Stainless’s team and technology into Anthropic’s platform group to deepen Claude’s integration with external data sources, APIs, and enterprise workflows. Industry analysts frame the move as both an agent-connectivity play and a competitive-denial strategy, as Anthropic consolidates the connector layer, MCP server generation, and core model capabilities under one vertically integrated stack.
