SK hynix launches Silicon Valley venture arm to back AI startups

September 18, 2026

The memory giant is trading passive tech-scouting for hands-on stakes in the startups shaping AI chip demand.

  • SK hynix unveiled SK hynix Ventures, a new corporate venture capital brand, at its inaugural 'SK hynix Ventures Day' in Silicon Valley, attended by CEO Kwak Noh-jung and global VC and startup representatives.
  • SK hynix is the world's leading maker of HBM memory chips that power AI accelerators, and has run a CVC arm through its US unit, SKHYA, since 2015.
  • The new brand widens investment targets beyond semiconductors and emerging tech to the full AI ecosystem, including AI computing, data centers, system software and optical interconnects.
  • SK hynix says cumulative returns from its CVC activity since 2015 have already exceeded twice the amount it invested, spanning the US, China, Israel and Japan.
  • The strategy shifts from prior 'tech sensing' and 'path finding' roles toward becoming a strategic partner that pursues joint equipment development and proof-of-concept projects with portfolio companies.
  • By taking equity stakes and co-developing hardware with startups building AI computing and data center infrastructure, SK hynix can steer its HBM and DRAM roadmap around real customer demand rather than reacting to it after the fact.
