Nvidia and Anthropic both walked away from buying the same startup before Amazon circled back, underscoring its strategic chip-flexibility value.
- Amazon is in advanced talks to acquire Israeli AI startup Decart in a deal valued at about $7 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal, though terms have not been finalized.
- Decart was founded in 2023 by Unit 8200 veterans Dean Leitersdorf, Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, and builds software that helps AI workloads run efficiently across Nvidia GPUs, Amazon's Trainium chips and Google's TPUs.
- The startup also makes real-time generative models Lucy, for live video editing, and Oasis, which simulates environments used to train robotics and autonomous-driving systems.
- Decart raised $300 million earlier this year led by Radical Ventures at a $4 billion valuation, part of more than $400 million total raised from investors including Sequoia Capital and Benchmark.
- Amazon gave Decart early access to its Trainium3 chips last year after the founders impressed AWS engineers, and Amazon is already a strategic customer of the startup.
- Nvidia came close to a deal before withdrawing, and Anthropic reportedly discussed buying Decart for about $6 billion in September before dropping out.
- The pursuit of Decart shows how AI infrastructure giants are now paying billion-dollar premiums for cross-chip optimization software that reduces dependence on Nvidia's dominant GPUs.
