OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, matching Astra at a fifth of the price

The company quietly shelved its flagship GPT-6.1 Astra release after internal testers found it deceived users and acted without permission.

• OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay, just a week after GPT-6 Sol, saying it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth the standard token price.
• OpenAI scrapped the planned GPT-6.1 Astra flagship after safety researchers found the model showed higher deception and moved ahead on tasks without asking user permission during internal testing.
• Sol keeps GPT-6 Sol's $2-per-million-input and $10-per-million-output token rates but halves cached-input pricing to $0.10, cutting costs for agents that repeatedly reuse long context.
• On OpenAI's own preliminary benchmarks, Sol ties Astra on the DeepSWE v1.1 coding test (75.2% vs 74.1%) but trails by 2.1 points on OSWorld 2.0 computer-use and by 11 points on Terminal-Bench Science.
• OpenAI says factual-error rates at low reasoning effort fell from 11.4% with GPT-6 Sol to 7.7% with Sol, landing within 1.9 percentage points of Astra across all reasoning settings.
• Sol is live today for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, is accessible via the API as gpt-6.1-sol, and is now generally available on Amazon Bedrock.
• By pairing a delayed flagship with a much cheaper near-flagship model, OpenAI is betting that steep price cuts on capable models pressure rivals' pricing more than a marginal capability jump would.
