AMD buys AI memory startup MEXT to turn flash into DRAM-like capacity
AMD has acquired AI-driven memory optimization startup MEXT, adding its Predictive Memory technology to AMD’s data center AI portfolio; financial terms were not disclosed.
Advanced Micro Devices has acquired MEXT, a privately held startup focused on AI-driven memory optimization for data centers. According to AMD’s June 15, 2026 announcement, MEXT’s predictive memory technology uses AI to make inexpensive flash storage behave more like DRAM from the perspective of operating systems and applications. The software-only engine performs microsecond-level predictions to prefetch data from flash into DRAM, enabling 2–4x higher usable memory capacity while aiming to preserve performance and cut infrastructure costs by reducing DRAM requirements. AMD plans to integrate MEXT’s technology across its EPYC CPUs, Instinct accelerators, and broader data center portfolio to address memory bottlenecks in AI, cloud, and high-performance computing workloads. Financial terms of the all-cash deal were not disclosed, and no valuation was provided.
The acquisition gives MEXT access to AMD’s large customer base and platform roadmap while bringing MEXT’s team of specialists in memory systems, infrastructure software, and AI into AMD’s data center group. Before the deal, MEXT sold its Predictive Memory product on a subscription basis priced by gigabyte of managed memory, targeting operators looking to alleviate DRAM constraints without overhauling hardware. For AMD, the transaction fits its strategy to deliver full-stack AI infrastructure by adding a memory-optimization layer on top of compute and networking components. Industry observers note that using software-based memory tiering to treat NAND flash like DRAM could help hyperscalers and enterprises manage the rapid growth of AI models and data-intensive workloads, though the claims around capacity gains and cost reductions still lack broad independent validation.
