Qualcomm closes all-stock acquisition of AI startup Modular

Chris Lattner's compiler platform becomes Qualcomm's bid to make one AI codebase run on any chip.

• Qualcomm announced it has completed its acquisition of Modular Inc, an AI-native software infrastructure startup, in an all-stock deal with financial terms undisclosed.
• Modular built a software platform, including the Mojo programming language and MAX execution engine, that lets developers optimize and deploy AI workloads across different types of chips without rewriting code for each.
• Modular's products, Mojo, MAX and Modular Cloud, will keep their names and branding, with Qualcomm pledging expanded investment and support rather than folding them into existing lines.
• Modular co-founder and CEO Chris Lattner, creator of the LLVM compiler and Swift language, joins Qualcomm as Executive Vice President of Advanced AI Software and Platforms.
• The deal tackles a real bottleneck in AI deployment: teams often need separate, hardware-specific software tooling for CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and custom accelerators, slowing how fast models move from data center to edge devices.
• By absorbing a hardware-agnostic AI software layer, Qualcomm is positioning itself to compete beyond mobile chips into data center and edge AI, where Nvidia's software stack has long been the default.
