MongoDB launches 9.0 and Atlas Infinite for AI-scale workloads

Separating storage from compute lets databases absorb sudden demand spikes without over-provisioning capacity in advance.

• MongoDB launched MongoDB 9.0 (generally available) and Atlas Infinite (public preview) at its Investor Day at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York on September 29, 2026.
• MongoDB is the NoSQL database company behind Atlas, its fully managed cloud data platform used by more than 70,000 customers, including roughly 75% of the Fortune 100.
• MongoDB 9.0 delivers up to 2x higher throughput on large instances, 35% faster findOne queries, and 30% faster updateOne queries versus version 8.0, plus expanded encrypted search on prefixes, suffixes and substrings.
• Atlas Infinite, described as MongoDB's largest architectural change to Atlas since 2016, separates compute from storage so each scales independently, cutting time-to-scale by more than 96% with no application code changes.
• Atlas Agent Engine, also released in public preview, adds semantic, episodic, taxonomic and procedural memory plus governance so AI agents can run in production across any model, framework or cloud.
• In testing, Brazilian fintech PicPay sustained 4x its normal peak traffic for two hours on Atlas Infinite with zero failures, while Icon Solutions processed up to 55% more transactions per second without changing its application.
• The launch landed a day after CJ Desai departed MongoDB to lead Meta's enterprise platform group, prompting Dev Ittycheria, who led MongoDB for 11 years, to return as interim CEO.
• Database version releases rarely move a software stock on their own; the real test is whether Atlas Infinite's consumption-based pricing translates into faster Atlas revenue growth in coming quarters.
