Generative Bionics unveils Gene.01 humanoid with full-body touch skin

Most industrial humanoids rely on cameras alone, leaving a blind spot the instant a worker gets close enough to touch them.
- Genoa-based startup Generative Bionics unveiled Gene.01, a humanoid robot wrapped in a sensor network running from torso to limbs, debuting it at AMD's Advancing AI conference in San Francisco.
- Generative Bionics is an Italian Institute of Technology spinout led by CEO Daniele Pucci, and built Gene.01 from concept to working hardware in six months.
- The robot's 'smart skin' senses touch, force, temperature and proximity simultaneously, letting it detect a person approaching and adjust movement before any collision occurs.
- The same sensors double as a teaching interface: a person can physically guide the robot's arm to show exactly how much force to apply, something video demonstrations can't convey.
- Gene.01 is designed as a base platform rather than a single product, customizable at the level of task-specific AI, exterior design, and swappable end effectors like hands or grippers.
- Generative Bionics previously raised $81 million in a seed round before this launch and has signed its first industrial contract with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.
- The company is open-sourcing Gene.01's digital twin across PyPI, Conda and ROS repositories and building a sovereign European actuation stack with Germany's Synapticon.
- As humanoids move onto factory floors alongside people, tactile pre-contact sensing addresses a safety gap that vision-only systems can miss when workers get physically close.
