UBTech begins mass deliveries of U1 companion robots in China

China's humanoid market has mostly chased factory work, making this the first bet that companionship alone can command luxury prices.

• UBTech's new consumer brand UWorld began delivering U1 humanoid companion robots to Chinese buyers on September 16, 2026, fulfilling preorders taken since early June.
• Founded in 2012 by Zhou Jian, UBTech markets the U1 purely as an emotional companion — not a cook, cleaner, or household helper — and sells it only to adults.
• The lineup spans three tiers: the half-body U1 Lite from about $16,500, up to the full-size flagship U1 Ultra priced near $135,000-$145,000.
• The Pro and Ultra bodies stand 1.68m to 1.83m tall, wrapped in medical-grade silicone skin with 88 degrees of freedom for blinking, smiling and hand-holding, powered by an emotion-aware AI that recognizes over 20 emotional states and stores memory locally.
• UBTech logged 13,361 orders by June 30, less than a month after presales opened, before deliveries began September 16.
• Chinese manufacturers made up more than 97% of global humanoid robot shipments in the first half of 2026, led by Agibot and Unitree, with UBTech among the few pushing into consumer companionship rather than industrial or logistics work.
• At the June unveiling, U1 Ultra units reportedly moved stiffly and wobbled during a catwalk demo, feeding a gap between the polished promotional footage and the real machine now shipping.
