Onsemi reportedly in talks to acquire chip startup Ferric for $1B

Deal Value
$1B
The startup's tiny voltage regulators cut power loss right as AI data centers strain against surging electricity demand.
- Onsemi, a semiconductor maker with roughly a $30 billion market cap, is in talks to acquire New York-based Ferric for close to $1 billion, with the structure possibly including earnout payments tied to performance targets.
- Founded in 2010, Ferric builds integrated voltage regulators that funnel power directly to small chips inside or beneath AI processors, shortening the distance electricity travels and cutting energy loss.
- Ferric's newest product, the Fe1767 Newport, is a dual-sided 145A voltage regulator the company says cuts voltage droop by up to 57% versus conventional power-delivery designs.
- Ferric has raised only about $41.8 million total, including a $32.1 million Series C in December 2024, making a roughly $1 billion price tag nearly 24 times its lifetime funding.
- The talks follow Onsemi's $5.7 billion cash deal for Synaptics this month and Analog Devices' $1.5 billion purchase of Empower Semiconductor in May, part of a broader chase for AI power-delivery technology.
- As AI data centers push electricity demand to new extremes, efficient power delivery is becoming as strategically valuable as raw compute, pushing even pre-revenue specialists toward billion-dollar price tags.
