Oncology-style molecular profiling is finally extending to heart disease, diabetes and neurodegeneration.
- Arboretum LifeSciences launched with a $30 million Series A led by F-Prime and GV, with .406 Ventures, Hims & Hers and Amgen also participating.
- The Cambridge, Mass.-based company, founded by former Broad Institute data science leaders, combines AI and genetic testing to bring precision medicine to common diseases rather than just cancer and rare disorders.
- Arboretum works with health systems including Advocate Health, Geisinger, Providence Healthcare and Cardiovascular Associates of America to deliver clinical genetic testing and build longitudinal research networks.
- The data generated also helps biopharma partners with target discovery, patient stratification and genomically-matched clinical trial recruitment.
- CEO Anthony Philippakis, also a general partner at GV, says the goal is to repeat oncology's 20-year shift toward molecular-defined therapies for diseases like coronary artery disease and diabetes.
- Common diseases like cardiovascular and metabolic conditions have lagged behind cancer in precision medicine for decades, so genomic stratification here could reshape how drugmakers design and run large, costly clinical trials.
