Apple quietly acqui-hired failed NotebookLM-style startup Huxe
October 9, 2026
An EU filing, not a press release, is how the public learned Apple grabbed the team months after it shut down.
- An EU Digital Markets Act filing reveals Apple can hire certain employees of AI audio startup Huxe and has a non-exclusive license to its IP; terms are undisclosed.
- Huxe was founded by Raiza Martin, Jason Spielman and Stephen Hughes, who previously built Google's NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook), and made an app that turned emails, calendars and news into personalized AI podcasts.
- The arrangement is structured as an acqui-hire, not a corporate acquisition: Apple gets job-offer rights and a non-exclusive license, but no shares or assets changed hands.
- Huxe had raised just $4.6 million from investors including Conviction, Genius Ventures, Dylan Field and Jeff Dean before shutting down its app on May 28, 2026, after failing to gain traction.
- Apple notified the European Commission of the deal on June 9, 2026, but it only became public in October after being spotted in the DMA transparency register.
- Huxe is at least Apple's fourth disclosed AI-related deal of 2026, following a roughly $2 billion purchase of whisper-speech startup Q.ai and a talent deal with avatar startup Animato.
- Acqui-hires let big tech firms absorb AI teams and technology while sidestepping formal merger review, a structure regulators including the FTC are now scrutinizing.
