$400M
The option structure lets a medtech giant test soft-tissue robotics before fully committing, as rivals already race to catch Intuitive's lead.
- Stryker made an approximately $400 million (£300 million) preferred equity investment in CMR Surgical and secured an exclusive option to acquire 100% of the company in the future.
- Cambridge, UK-based CMR Surgical makes the modular Versius soft-tissue surgical robot, used in more than 50,000 operations across 35-plus countries.
- Stryker becomes the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius portfolio, while CMR Surgical continues to lead product development and commercialization everywhere outside the U.S.
- Versius received FDA de novo clearance in 2024 for gallbladder procedures and had been used in more than 45,000 procedures globally as of early 2026, according to a J.P. Morgan analyst cited by MedTech Dive.
- The deal follows Medtronic's $700 million investment in Cornerstone Robotics' Sentire system, as Stryker, Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson all push into soft-tissue robotics to challenge market leader Intuitive.
- Structuring the deal as a minority investment with a future buyout option lets Stryker gain commercial exposure to soft-tissue robotics without the risk of a full acquisition in a market just opened up by new FDA-cleared competitors.
