Helsing launches Contra air defense system and two interceptor missiles
October 26, 2026
The product bundles low-cost mass-produced interceptors with AI software, undercutting pricier legacy missile defense systems.
- Helsing unveiled Contra, an AI-controlled autonomous air defense system, alongside two interceptor missiles, AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush, at an event in Berlin on October 26, 2026.
- Munich-based Helsing, founded in 2021, builds AI-defined autonomous military systems across air, land and sea domains, including drones like HX-2 and CA-1 Aurora.
- Contra fuses sensors and effectors into one AI-managed air picture, built on Helsing's Altra C2 platform, enabling detection and engagement of hundreds or thousands of drones and missiles at once while keeping humans in control of decisions.
- AD-1 Inferno is a jet-powered interceptor capable of loitering, swarming and repeated re-engagement; AD-2 Ambush is a solid-rocket-motor missile reaching about Mach 2.5 with a range over 20km, both container-launched and built at Helsing's Resilience Factories.
- Helsing says Russia has ramped jet-powered drone output, including Geran-4 and Geran-5 models, to 4,000 units per month while building new launch sites, putting parts of the EU within range.
- Co-founder Niklas Köhler says Contra ends the choice between slow fair-weather drones and million-euro missiles fired at cheap mass-produced targets.
- The launch puts Helsing in competition with established German defense suppliers like Rheinmetall in a European air-defense market that drew roughly €511 million in 2026 startup funding for interceptor and counter-drone technologies.
- By pairing cheap, mass-producible hardware with AI software, Helsing is betting that affordability and scale, not exquisite single-unit capability, will define the next generation of missile defense.
