Lunit AI mammography tool rolls out across Stockholm Region screening
September 28, 2026
The software now stands in for one of the two radiologists required under Europe's standard double-reading protocol.
- Lunit announced that its AI mammography tool, Lunit INSIGHT MMG, will serve as an independent second reader across the entire Stockholm Region, deployed alongside imaging partner Sectra.
- Lunit is a South Korea-based company listed on the KRX (328130) that builds AI software for cancer diagnostics and precision oncology, including the pathology platform Lunit SCOPE.
- The rollout spans three institutions handling Stockholm's breast screening - Capio Saint Göran, Karolinska University Hospital and Södersjukhuset - and is expected to support 200,000-250,000 exams a year once fully implemented.
- Since adopting the tool in 2023, Saint Göran has used it to read roughly 200,000 cases, and a 2024 RSNA update reported a 15% rise in cancer detection with a 36%-plus cut in radiologists' reading time.
- The deployment builds on ScreenTrustCAD, a study of about 55,000 women published in Lancet Digital Health, which found AI-plus-one-radiologist reading caught more cancers than the standard two-radiologist double read.
- Stockholm marks Lunit's second region-wide deployment in Sweden after Dalarna County, following earlier regional contracts in Valencia, Spain, as it builds out province-level screening programs across Europe.
- Letting software stand in for one of Europe's two mandatory radiologist readers signals a shift in how overstretched public screening systems could scale cancer detection without adding specialist headcount.
