Qualcomm to acquire PickNik, maker of open-source MoveIt robotics software
October 20, 2026
A chipmaker absorbing robotics' default motion-planning library shows software stacks increasingly getting tied to specific silicon.
- Qualcomm Technologies agreed to acquire PickNik Inc., the steward of MoveIt, a widely used open-source robotics manipulation framework; the deal is subject to customary closing conditions and terms were undisclosed.
- Built on the Robot Operating System, MoveIt handles motion planning and collision checking and already runs in production on NASA missions, surgical robots, warehouse logistics and food-processing sanitation lines.
- Qualcomm pledged MoveIt will stay open-source and hardware-agnostic while gaining tighter integration with Qualcomm's Dragonwing robotics platforms and Arduino's VENTUNO Q boards.
- MoveIt counts over 560 contributors across 40 repositories, roughly 6,700 GitHub stars, 4,400 forks and more than 1,700 academic citations, underscoring how embedded it is in robotics research and industry.
- The deal follows Qualcomm's March 2026 collaboration with NEURA Robotics on cognitive and humanoid robotics, part of a broader push beyond smartphones into industrial IoT and edge AI.
- By owning the planning software that sits between AI models and physical actuation, Qualcomm can tune its chips specifically for the robotics workloads developers already rely on, deepening lock-in even as the library stays nominally open.
