Zocdoc buys insurance startup Sohar Health in its first-ever acquisition
October 14, 2026
The deal signals a shift from booking appointments to owning the insurance verification step that frustrates patients most.
- Zocdoc acquired Sohar Health, an automated insurance eligibility verification company, in a deal that closed October 2, 2026 for an undisclosed sum — the first acquisition in Zocdoc's nearly 20-year history.
- Sohar Health, founded in 2023 by physician Ashish Mandavia and engineer Lucas Gordon, uses just a patient's name and date of birth to verify coverage, benefits and in-network status across 1,000+ health plans.
- The acquisition formalizes an existing partnership: Zocdoc picked Sohar as its insurance tech vendor in 2025 after evaluating rival eligibility platforms, and millions of patients have already used its tech inside Zocdoc.
- The deal follows Zocdoc's launch of its Care Access Network this month, which lets partners like Amazon Health AI, Gemini, Yelp, Healthgrades and Blue Shield of California book from a pool of 200,000+ providers and 10,000+ insurance plans.
- Half of insured adults say they struggle to understand at least one aspect of their health insurance, according to KFF data cited in coverage of the deal.
- By buying rather than just licensing eligibility tech, Zocdoc is betting that controlling the insurance-verification layer — not just scheduling — is what makes it indispensable infrastructure across the booking ecosystem it's now opening to outside partners.
