A year-old lab with no product or revenue just quadrupled its valuation, betting it can squeeze far more output from scarce GPUs.
- Flapping Airplanes, a one-year-old AI research lab, raised a $1 billion Series A co-led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital at a $6 billion valuation, announced October 21, 2026.
- Founded in late 2025 in San Francisco by Aidan Smith, Asher Spector and Ben Spector, the company is building what it calls the 'world's most complete megakernel framework' for training AI with less data and compute.
- The new valuation is four times the $1.5 billion mark set just nine months earlier, when the company raised a $180 million seed round from GV, Sequoia and Index.
- The founders say their megakernel can overlap memory-bound inference with compute-bound training in a single GPU program, keeping chips from sitting idle between tasks.
- Flapping Airplanes joins a wave of AI 'neolabs' that raise big before shipping products, alongside Yann LeCun's AMI Labs (~$1B raised in March) and TypeSafe AI's $870M Series B at a $7.5B valuation.
- The round ranks in the top 1% by size among roughly 3,500 comparable early-stage deep tech deals, arriving in a quarter where AI made up 64% of global venture funding.
- Investors are pricing in the belief that squeezing more performance out of existing chips could be as valuable as building new ones, even before a product or revenue exists.
