Anysphere Buys AI Code Review Startup Graphite for Cursor
October 23, 2026
Pairing AI-generated code with AI-powered review closes the gap between drafting software and shipping it safely.
- Anysphere, the company behind the Cursor AI coding assistant, has acquired Graphite, an AI-powered code review and debugging startup, for an undisclosed sum that reportedly far exceeds Graphite's prior $290 million valuation.
- Graphite, founded in 2020 and based in New York with roughly 102 employees, built AI-driven code review tools centered on 'stacked pull requests,' letting developers work on multiple interdependent changes without waiting on approvals.
- The companies share investors Accel and Andreessen Horowitz, and Anysphere CEO Michael Truell knew Graphite co-founders Merrill Lutsky, Greg Foster and Thomas Reimers from the Neo Scholar program before founding Cursor.
- Graphite raised a $52 million Series B earlier this year at a $290 million valuation after totaling about $74.3 million raised to date.
- The deal follows two other Anysphere acquisitions this year: technical-recruiting firm Growth by Design last month, and the talent team of AI CRM startup Koala in July at a $129 million post-money valuation.
- AI code review is crowding fast: rival CodeRabbit was valued at $550 million in September, while smaller competitor Greptile closed a $25 million Series A this fall.
- As coding agents get better at writing software, the bottleneck shifts to reviewing and merging it safely, so AI coding platforms are racing to own that entire pipeline rather than just the drafting step.
