Booking Holdings launches AI travel agent Vayo, eyes $100M investment
October 14, 2026
The investment is conditional on product traction, a hedge rarely seen when a giant bankrolls an in-house AI bet.
- Booking Holdings launched Vayo as a standalone company and said it plans to invest up to $100 million, contingent on continued product progress and market conditions.
- Vayo scans a user's email inbox to pull together flights, hotels, activities and reservations, then proactively monitors price drops and flags how disruptions ripple across a trip.
- The Seattle-based team of about 20 built the product in roughly six months; CEO Mike Fridgen previously ran Madrona Venture Labs and Decide.com, while CTO Allen Chen was CTO of Fanatics Collectibles.
- Vayo is in free, invite-only private beta via a waitlist, targeting frequent leisure travelers who plan trips for their families -- a group Fridgen estimates at about 5% of all travelers.
- Booking Holdings is also backing a separate AI startup called Lola focused on experiences, signaling a strategy of incubating multiple independent AI ventures rather than retrofitting one app.
- Booking Holdings shares gained roughly 1-2% the morning of the announcement, with the company's market cap around $120.7 billion.
- By spinning Vayo out as its own branded company rather than bolting AI onto Booking.com, Booking Holdings is betting that trust and loyalty for an AI travel agent need a distinct identity, not just a chatbot feature.
