Anthropic acquires solo-founder biotech Mithril, gains first drug programs
October 27, 2026
It signals AI labs shifting from selling software to pharma toward owning drug pipelines outright.
- Anthropic disclosed on October 27 that it had acquired Mithril Medicine, a Cambridge, Massachusetts biotech with a single full-time employee, in a deal that actually closed in July; terms were not disclosed.
- Founder Cody Tranbarger ran Mithril alone, using Claude to coordinate contracts, experiments and data across 11 outside labs and eight paid consultants instead of hiring staff.
- Mithril's lead program is a bispecific antibody for LAMA2-related congenital muscular dystrophy; treated mice showed roughly double the grip strength and muscle force of untreated controls after six weeks.
- Claude analyzed 341 pages of manufacturing data on 113 candidate antibodies to sort which needed further purification, work that would normally require a larger research team.
- The purchase follows Anthropic's April acquisition of Coefficient Bio and coincides with new Claude partnerships announced with Bristol Myers Squibb, BigHat Biosciences and Generate Biomedicines.
- Anthropic says Mithril aims to select formal drug candidates in 2027, with human clinical trials for its lead muscular dystrophy program possible as early as late 2028.
- The deal shows an AI company moving past selling tools to pharma and instead owning drug-development programs directly, testing whether a 'one-person company' model can scale biotech research.
