DoorDash unveils DoorDash Air, in-house drone delivery for restaurants
September 30, 2026
Engineers designed loading systems and routing software before the aircraft itself, using years of order data to determine what could safely fly.
- DoorDash unveiled its purpose-built six-propeller autonomous aircraft for DoorDash Air at its Dash Forward 2026 event, with pilot deliveries starting in Northern California alongside Chipotle, Popeyes and Momo N Curry.
- DoorDash Labs, the R&D team behind sidewalk delivery robot Dot, built DoorDash Air and its Autonomous Delivery Platform, software that routes orders among human Dashers, robots and drones.
- DoorDash received FAA Part 135 air carrier certification in July 2026, clearing it to legally operate a commercial drone delivery service in the U.S.
- About 80% of typical DoorDash restaurant orders are light and small enough for the aircraft to carry, and early test flights averaged under five minutes from kitchen to doorstep.
- The aircraft was tuned for quiet cruising, roughly as loud as a passing car, with its design shaped by data drawn from DoorDash's more than 14 billion lifetime orders.
- DoorDash already runs drone deliveries through partners Wing and Flytrex, which have completed tens of thousands of flights; DoorDash Air adds an in-house option alongside them rather than replacing them.
- Owning the full delivery stack, ground handoffs, routing software and the aircraft, lets DoorDash choose order-by-order whether a human, robot or drone is fastest, betting that speed itself drives more frequent ordering.
