Workday agrees to acquire agentic identity startup C1.ai

October 13, 2026

The deal tackles a governance gap where most firms run autonomous AI agents without any mature way to control what they can touch.

  • Workday signed a definitive agreement to acquire C1.ai (also known as ConductorOne), an identity governance platform for people and AI agents; deal terms were not disclosed.
  • C1.ai connects to systems like email, CRM, code repositories, finance software and cloud infrastructure to grant and revoke access for both employees and AI agents in real time.
  • C1.ai's own research found 95% of large U.S. companies already run autonomous agents, but Deloitte data shows only 21% have a mature way to govern them.
  • Workday plans to fold C1.ai into its Agent System of Record, extending it from simply registering AI agents to governing exactly what those agents can access across Workday and other enterprise systems.
  • The transaction is expected to close in Workday's fiscal fourth quarter, ending January 31, 2027, subject to customary closing conditions.
  • Workday already serves more than 11,500 organizations, including over 65% of the Fortune 500, positioning HR and IT events like hiring and departures as natural triggers for access changes.
  • As AI agents proliferate faster than quarterly access reviews can track, enterprise software vendors are racing to make identity governance automatic rather than a manual ticketing afterthought.
